Samsung A5 owner ?

My brother has broken the screen on his Samsung A5 2017 and I am trying to recover the data from it. The good news is the touchscreen is still working as I can call it and swipe to answer successfully.

I am looking for help from a friendly redditor who has this phone to help me know where to press to allow it to talk to my PC. Fortunately my brother’s security practices are appalling and there is no password or pattern so a simple swipe from left to right should unlock it.

I need help with where to press next. I can plug it in and my computer sees it and I think I can unlock it. Where do I tap next? If someone can post a video of the procedure I would be eternally grateful.

Hi! You might be able to mirror the phone with scrcpy – https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy/

Did you happen to have adb debugging enabled on the phone? If you did great and adb will work!

Otherwise it’ll be a challenge to get it set up as you need to go to settings – developer options and adb debugging. It’s feasible but interesting!

Hi! Sadly debugging is not enabled and I can see it being quite a challenge to enable without the screen working. It is too many taps in the dark!

scrcpy would be a great idea if debug was enabled but I am out of luck there. My brother doesn’t know how to enable google backup for his pictures so there is no way he would know to enable that.

Okay since you said you computer can see it, why can;t you pull off the files off there?

It shows up but it is waiting for the phone to authorize it to access the data. It is to stop someone finding a phone in the street and plugging it in and getting all the data off it. You have to unlock it and tap allow. I just can’t work out where to tap allow.

Oh yeah that! It should be in the center third of the screen. The okay button should be on the right side.

What do you need? Just someone to plug their A5 into a PC then let you know where the OK button or whatever is? Pretty sure my wife’s phone is an A5, I could try it and see what happens, then take a screenshot or something if that would help

There’s an A5 in our house, I could help you out tomorrow evening if you still need it.
